These classic, three-arm protractors, vintage '60s-'80s and straight off decommissioned warships, operate using the principle of landmark triangulation.
They were a primary back-up method of determining a ship's position during the Cold War.
Navigators trained to use them in the event of nuclear electromagnetic pulse or when all the fancy, high-tech equipment is otherwise unavailable.) Intricately machined chrome steel frame with dual micrometer knobs for precision adjustments. Protractors in extraordinary condition (dovetail wooden cases really did their duty protecting the instruments inside).
